ZAIKO: Please tell us how this "Curry BIG" event came to be.
Kamimura (Aoiro 1-go): We were doing new material two-man lives every month. Since the award races are starting around June, we thought let’s do something in May to wrap it up. Until now, we had done three new pieces each time, but this time we wanted to come up with more new material, so we're doing five pieces each.
We also decided to perform at a slightly larger venue. I was open to any partner, but since Salubase didn’t seem to have any competitive material yet this year, I invited them to create two pieces together for the finals!
Orita (Salubase): I’ve said this a lot, but I’ve always wanted to do a two-man live with Kamimura-san—Aoiro 1-go. However, Aoiro 1-go is not the proactive type when it comes to organizing shows, and has only done a solo show once... So, with that type not being the case, I thought, "I am still not capable enough to invite them myself."
But then this year, I did a two-man live with Hamano and Henmi, who are younger than us…
Kamimura: I feel threatened by them.
Orita: Not at all, we still have a long way to go! The following month, we did a two-man live with the even younger group "Gunjou Danchi" and I was just waiting, thinking "when are they coming?" Tomoyappu was really dissatisfied about that too…
Tomoyappu (Salubase): I’ve mentioned this before at a drinking party, but we have been doing this for 11 years, and I’m sure they know we’ve been with them this whole time. We’ve been supporting "Aoiro 1-go!u007f" together. And then when we opened the lid, it was like, "We’ll be doing a two-man live!" and it’s "Hamano and Henmi!?" I don’t even know where that came from…
Enomoto (Aoiro 1-go): No, I get it (laughs). Ota Productions training school! Not from the outside!
Tomoyappu: What is this "Hamano and Henmi" anyway in Katakana... Those guys are funny and I get that they have a demand. And then they announced they would do another two-man live, and I thought, "Alright!" and then it was Gunjou Danchi!! How greedy can you be for money!!!
All: (Laughs)
Tomoyappu: I told Kamimura-san at a drinking party, "We might fail in our venture, but let’s do this together with the right spirit! Aren’t we the main ones here?" Kamimura-san just laughed... "No, no, no..." while I was going on and on, saying, "Well, okay."
"No, you’re saying too much (laughs)," I felt like I was being kicked aside and sulking, and then this two-man live got scheduled for 5/17!!!! This handsome fellow!!!!!!!
All: (Laughs)

Tomoyappu: I’m just getting burned with jealousy and I’m nearly on fire! When I was alarmingly simmering, they hit it big with a full house, and doing five pieces! "With the strength we’ve built up until now with K-PRO, we’re forming a killer combination to perform in a big venue, so please help us, Salubase!" I felt like I was charmed.
Orita: Why does Kamimura-san want to be popular with Tomoyappu?
Tomoyappu: I was being maneuvered…
Kamimura: It’s a technique to gain popularity.
Tomoyappu: This is intense. Kamimura-san’s popularity-gaining technique is crazy. After getting hit twice, we burst onto the scene.
Orita: Right. I thought it was over when we did "Zest" in March. Not even Ota Pro!
Tomoyappu: Right! From another agency! From a senior in Manzai!!! We're virtually “out of the game”!
Kamimura: Was it an amateur level?
Orita: No, they are a very professional senior! Very professional, a senior.
Tomoyappu: I was just so happy! I want to show what we can do up to this point, and I want this to be a day that people will continue to expect great things from us!
Orita: Did you wrap it up?
Tomoyappu: Yes, ultimately. That’s the background! It’s not really a love call from Salubase or anything. Who proposed it?
Kamimura: (to Kariya) Ask about it, a bit.
Kariya (Aoiro 1-go): I don’t know the background. I don’t.
All: (Laughs)
Orita: The start was Kamimura-san!
Tomoyappu: But did you already join the LINE group after it was decided to do it?
Orita: I was only told! Just like everyone else! It’s not like we talked about it privately. The (LINE) group was just created without permission.
Tomoyappu: Oh! Was the timing the same back then?
Orita: Exactly! We all were! And the no-go dates, "On this day it’s no good, just give me a few dates like around March" were proposed and a few came up quickly. Kariya-san had a no-go date because of a friend’s wedding in Fukuoka, and we managed to avoid it, but it was on the no-go date Kariya-san provided that this two-man live fell into place.
All: (Laughs)
Tomoyappu: We had quite a few possible dates! We were almost settled on a day that wasn’t a wedding, but then it turned into "That day is out" and "Then A-day is no good, and B-day" and "B is no good, and C" and in the end, C-day was Kariya-san’s (friend's) wedding! Even though he had provided a no-go!
Orita: Then Kariya-san said, "I have a friend’s wedding that day, but it’s okay" (laughs). We got to witness ”Aoiro 1-go”!
Tomoyappu: Then after that, I asked, "We decided on that day, but is it alright?" and he was like, "Well, well, well, I shouldn't go anyway. It’s just fine" or something like that.
Kariya: But now I really want to go.
All: (Laughs)

Tomoyappu: Why didn’t you refuse? You should have said it!
Kariya: I was looking for a reason to decline, but now that I have this job lined up, I thought, "Well, it can’t be helped." But when I talked to my classmate the other day, everyone said they were going, so I really want to go now.
Orita: At that time, I didn’t want to go to the wedding (laughs).
Kariya: I want to go, but because of the money and various reasons. Since this got decided, I thought this would be a good excuse.
Orita: That’s a cool reason.
Kariya: Well, I thought I managed somehow, but now I actually want to go. Kodai (friend), I’m sorry.
All: (Laughs)
ZAIKO: This live performance is also scheduled to be streamed on ZAIKO, but how do you feel about your stage being streamed?
Orita: All three of us are from Kagoshima, so we have no means for friends and family to see (the live). Since they can’t come, I sometimes get messages like "I watched the stream" and during those times, I really appreciate streaming.
Tomoyappu: It really helps to bridge the physical distance, and even though I keep saying this, this guy (Orita) has a girlfriend in Kagoshima, so to show her funny pieces, I have to rely on streaming power.
Orita: Yes! With streams, sometimes they can be viewed for a week. So after our show ends and I’m like "we were good" or "we came in first," I can say to my girlfriend, "You should buy this stream" so to speak, it allows for a follow-up play of rock-paper-scissors (laughs). I can show only the things that got a good reaction, and that’s a strong point.
Tomoyappu: Therefore, thanks to ZAIKO, it fills the loneliness of the two of us and helps strengthen our relationship. I owe you one.
Kamimura: That's certainly true.

ZAIKO: Finally, please share your thoughts and messages for fans leading up to this live performance.
Orita: When it was decided that we would do a two-man live with these two groups, I think in terms of percentage, the audience will be about 70:30, favoring Aoiro 1-go’s fans. 70...? No, maybe 80:20? Possibly... well, somewhere around there.
But even that "80" should somewhat like Salubase! We’ve been performing together for so long! Fans of Ota Pro and others. In group settings like our usual live shows, we have a rough idea about gathering and I wish just a little that people would start liking us too! To fans of Aoiro 1-go!
I hope fans of Aoiro 1-go will like us a bit more!!!
Tomoyappu: Are you trying to take pie from the seniors?
Orita: There are so many fans of Aoiro 1-go! Just a little, if you already like Aoiro 1-go even a bit, you should think our sketches are funny too! We are similar in that way, our sketches!
Kamimura: We are completely opposite (laughs).
Tomoyappu: I wish the people who have been supporting us will like Salubase more and I want those who get to know us newly to think, "Oh! That’s nice!" and feel this way as well, something like that, he (Orita) says. He doesn’t mean to take fans from the seniors...
Orita: It’s better to take them, right!
Tomoyappu: ...Some people might be getting a bit tired of Aoiro 1-go.
Kamimura: No. Our fans are really strong. Not many, but they are persistent!
Orita: Indeed, they are strong...
Kamimura: They are tough!!
Tomoyappu: As we start to become popular, fans come and go, but they get trained through that to be resilient fans that go "Zun!" each time.
Enomoto: I’m grateful.
Kamimura: There aren’t many, but it’s just like that.
Tomoyappu: There’s an overflow of love.
Kamimura: I definitely want you all to come to this new material live and watch the pieces we developed at that show get up to a level that can get into "King of Conte". See how that piece has gotten this strong, or that one is now good enough for TV. "Become a witness of the legend!"
Orita: You know... Kamimura-san really stands out with his comments. This is where he gains fans! I want to say something too!

Kamimura: Kariya, Kariya!
Kariya: I really can’t believe that there are people who like us. If I were a fan of comedy, I probably wouldn’t have become a fan of Aoiro 1-go, but I really appreciate those who like us. Please come a lot...
All: (Laughs)
Orita: It’s long and lacks impact, it doesn’t have much punch!
Tomoyappu: You should have definitely made a strong statement in one word, or something like this! Matsuyama!!
Matsuyama: ...?
Orita & Tomoyappu: To the fans.
Matsuyama: To the fans?
Orita: Why did you only realize this now!?
All: (Laughs)
Matsuyama: As one of the fans of comedy, I can genuinely tell you that “Now is the time to follow these two groups.” While being in comedy, I see a lot of talented people around and many who have gone on to succeed, so I can feel who will stick around and who won't… you sense that yourself too.
In that context, I don’t really want to say this too loudly, but I think Aoiro 1-go and Salubase are the kind of people who will remain.
Orita: Is that so? Now??
Matsuyama: So the value of this two-man live is bigger than you think~...
All: (Laughs)
Orita: Why are you the one who seems uninterested!!
Matsuyama: I’d like you to find the value in it!
Tomoyappu: Even though we are still few, we want to repay the fans...
Orita: Yes, I really want to. We want to have a very entertaining live, and it would be like repaying them.
Tomoyappu: Not just on this day, but going forward from here. Using this day as a turning point, even more.
Enomoto: This two-man live on 5/17 will kick off the K-PRO Special Week. Apparently, we’re starting it. I want to do my best to make it exciting and I want those who know just our name to come and see it. We’ll elevate it!
Kamimura: Because of Salubase, they’ll probably think we lack talent in this two-man live.
Orita: They won’t think that!
Kamimura: For example, you have groups like "Gaku Zuke" who will attract fans seeing comedy from a different angle.
Tomoyappu: I really want to see that!
Kamimura: Surprisingly, it's often the case. We can barely hold our own! Barely!
Orita: Well, we can go either way.
Kamimura: But when someone thinks, "No more sports manga," Salubase is like "No more manga similar to 'SLAM DUNK'" right down the center. However, going straight down the center tends to be funny, I feel that way about Salubase.
Tomoyappu: "Zero sense, 100 fun, toppings toppings, hey wait! Curry BIG!"
All: (Laughs)

Tomoyappu: Exactly this!
Kamimura: However, Salubase really shines with their sense in the live scene. Comedy fans tend to like niche jokes. When it airs on TV, in the end, it’s people like Salubase yelling in the middle that gets through. Working with them provides a learning opportunity.
Because in the end, ridiculous jokes or loud punchlines get laughs... And that’s why I want you to come see them, in a normal setting.
Orita: Honestly, I'm just incredibly happy to hear something like this... We don’t usually get this kind of compliment... We’re always being scolded...
All: (Laughs)
