[Work Review] A gathering of noteworthy young artists. Experience six distinct expressions at the music × culture MIX party | CULPOOL -TAKE OUT-

Creator stories

Since 2015, a hybrid event featuring various artists has been held irregularly with the concept of "a special party where you can freely play with trend culture and music". This event is ‘CULPOOL -TAKE OUT-’.

This event was held on February 28 this year as an audience-less broadcast on the YouTube channel "Kankanan Fevers NEO" and is being re-broadcast for paid ZAIKO members on ZAIKO Premium within ‘ZAIKO TV (formerly: Encore Theater)’.

First, we see the two members of Chunky Cookie Club standing on the floor of an empty Liquidroom in Ebisu. Their rap and vocals from pumi and K.E.Y. ride bouncily on pop and colorful tracks. They performed five songs, including "Nai Mono Nedari" from their latest album "Popcorn", followed by the opening act, Foods. He is a singer-songwriter/trackmaker born in 1997. His performance with a standalone microphone catches the eye next to his laptop for backing tracks. You are drawn into the refreshing and humorous world of his lyrics, and the 15 minutes pass by in no time.

Shifting to the stage, we head to the live performance of No Buses. With a four-member lineup featuring twin guitars, they overwhelm the audience with a sense of speed right from the start with their garage sound. The sight of vocalist Daiki Kondo playing while wearing a mask and backpack may seem unusual at first glance, but it seems to blend with a certain unease that the band possesses. Midway through the live show, their new member Haruki Wada joins for the current lineup’s performance. While their previous performances were great, the added guitar layers bring depth and noise to the sound, increasing its richness. Particularly in the performance of "Imagine Siblings", the significance of having a triple guitar is felt throughout the performance. Aside from a blunt “Thank you very much” at the end, there are no MCs in this tight and stoic live. This is No Buses.

The fourth group, The fin., performs with members arranged in a circular formation facing each other. From the first song, "Pale Blue", the ensemble progresses around their signature fresh synthesizer sounds. During the MC, vocalist Yuto Uchino comments, “We’ve gotten used to streaming live shows. You can watch it at home, and streaming live shows are pretty good. You can watch it sometimes, not watch it sometimes, making it a nice background music.” He shares the unique appeal of this situation. The performance continues, interweaving new tracks released in 2021 like "Sapphire". With ups and downs, they close the live gracefully with "Over The Hill".

Next up is Johnnivan. This five-member indie dance rock band formed in 2017 consists of multinational members from Japan, America, and South Korea. They follow with the funky guitar cutting of “Punch Sound Effects” and the new wave-influenced “Calm Down”, showcasing the band's performance skills. The demeanor of vocalist Johnathan Sullivan feels very much like that of a rock singer. Personally, I find it deeply moving that the reinterpretation of the post-punk to electro-crash wave that arose in the 2000s is already happening. It’s also surprising that it’s being done by a band born in Japan. While I ponder this, they excellently complete their approximately 30-minute set and leave the stage.

Closing the show, we have a band set by trumpeter Takuya Kuroda, based in New York, who was the first Japanese artist to contract with Blue Note. They open with one of his signature songs, "Rising Son". Along with Kuroda, an ironclad quintet with saxophonist Akihiro Nishiguchi, keyboardist Jun Miyakawa, bassist Kouhei Nakabayashi, and drummer Tomoaki Kanno progresses with their performance. Kuroda’s funny MC is sprinkled throughout the breaks in the songs, contrasting with the tension during performances and making people smile. They choose the timeless song “Sometime, Somewhere, Somehow” to close the show and "CULPOOL -TAKE OUT-" concludes on a high note.

The charm of this show, "CULPOOL -TAKE OUT-", is that you can enjoy a wide variety of high-quality live performances ranging from hip-hop, dance music, rock to jazz. Moreover, you can repeatedly watch those scenes that caught your attention. This is one of the great appeals of streaming live shows.

In addition to the main show, a talk content titled "CULPOOL -TAKE OUT- TALK SESSION" featuring the two from Chunky Cookie Club, the opening act, and the music director of "CULPOOL", Yoriko Sugimoto, is also available. It includes discussions about “food,” which is one of Sugimoto’s special focuses for this event, making it a program to further enjoy the main show.
