■About Shibuya Hyakkendana Shopping District
Founded immediately after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1924 (Taisho 13) as part of the Shibuya development plan following reconstruction. Protected by Chiyoda Inari Shrine, which was relocated to Hyakkendana and has historical significance as the guardian spirit worshipped during the construction of Edo Castle, many people and businesses have gathered and developed under the auspices of the God of Prosperity. Following the complete destruction from the Tokyo air raids, various dining establishments such as cafes, bars, drinking places, cafeterias, and Western food restaurants emerged, and theaters like Theatre Shibuya also lined the streets. Its vibrancy was even compared to Asakusa's Nakamise. Many historical poets and singers connected to this area have made it a beloved entertainment district. Even after more than 100 years since its development and as times have changed, it continues to evolve into a unique area where remnants of the former flower town and the lingering atmosphere of the Showa era intersect with modern culture.
