ZAIKO: Spicy Garlic is in their fifth year since formation, but three years ago, they already won at 'Arabiki Dan' and 'NHK New Comedy Award'. Has it been smooth sailing since the formation of the duo until now?

Katayama: No, during the first year of forming the duo, we didn’t achieve any results. We lost in the first round of King of Cont. Both Jon and I had better results with our previous partners, but as soon as we became Spicy Garlic, we ended up dropping out in the first round, which was very concerning. Even though we only did skits, we rushed to enter M-1 and did stand-up, and we lost in the first round there as well.

Jon: That's right.

Katayama: I felt that we needed to change something, so I kept creating new material and presenting it live. That’s how in our second year we somehow got a reaction at 'Arabiki Dan'.

ZAIKO: The late-night program 'Arabiki Dan' and the orthodox 'NHK New Comedy Award' have contrasting images, but did you differentiate your material for each show?

Katayama: Actually, it’s the same material.

Jon: It’s a skit called "Zombie" that uses pantomime with an escalator.

Katayama: "Zombie" was well-received at both venues; it feels like... we might have made an incredible invention.

ZAIKO: You are in charge of creating material, Katayama. What are the characteristics of Spicy Garlic's material?

Katayama: There are three important things I focus on when creating material. The first is that Jon's facial expressions are a home run for me. So, the material that brings out his facial expressions.

Jon: There’s a possibility that only one person in the world is into it.

Katayama: There are times when the audience isn’t laughing, but I can’t help but laugh at Jon's face. It’s such a funny face~. The second point is that the movements are big. The third is that the punchlines and responses are not clearly separated. There are a lot of things like that.
